The products filter module can group and categorize products by a specific type and assist with facet navigation. It solves problems organizing a large number of categories and products where each product may be assigned a single filter type and may have an unlimited number of filter groups.

This multi-purpose products classification add-on, can filter items via navigation elements and expose the e-commerce products in different ways, allowing customers to locate products by range or search the store by product type.

The Product Filters is designed to provide enhanced web navigation methods, improve the website's search facility and it's fully configurable from the administration end, where product groups can be virtually generated.

A separate database structure is kept with the products table where each filter automatically generates an indexed database column with a dynamic PHP parameter, that in turn, is used with the generated friendly URLs. Products categorization via filtering and filter assignment, can be accomplished when editing a product. The administrator is able to assign a unique value - from each filter group - to each product via a drop-down list of filters. The operation of filter assignments is optional, meaning products may have none, one, or multiple filters assigned.

Each filter may include multiple filter values. On the catalog end, each filtered page, is also supported by SEO-G, META-G when using the I-Metrics Layer  and the filter parameters can become part of friendly URLs. This approach, creates alternative SEO pages for product listings, naturally helping with overall website optimization.

Product filters in essence, replace to a major extend, the necessity for the products-to-categories relationship, where each product is assigned to multiple categories. Instead, the Product Filters module automatically generates different products navigation elements from within the product listing page, groups products together, whilst products to categories assignments are left unique. Filtering products also eliminates product page duplication, as relationships among products are now covered in an alternative way.

Without the use of the products filters module, merchants may have to create multiple categories, in an attempt to categorize products differently and assist or enhance the website navigation for visitors.

The drawback with the products to categories approach, is the categories management, because it requires an additional filtering mechanism, which often is deployed as a hard-coded case on the catalog end of the e-shop to separate categories and create different listings of products. In contrast using the product filters, a merchant has no need to create additional code for his store and/or go through a complicated categories management process.

Custom module options can be specified when requesting this service, so the functionality of the product filters extends to the main menu of the e-shop and/or left-right navigation columns. These control options are available from the product filters management menu page on the administration panel but in many cases the layout options are template specific. The product filter layout options drive this alternative navigation via filtered products with some custom work on the catalog end.

Product filters can also be used solely for administrative purposes, for example when categorizing products into an RSS feed, for uploading to search engines using various shopping methods. It can be used as part of alternative search procedures, when visitors wish to locate a specific product, knowing only its type. Filtered products by type can implemented as part of the store's quick search or in the advanced search page.

This service can be also applied to the original osCommerce MS2.2 engine. Custom options are available under request including: additional product filters navigation layouts, positioning and controls to improve the products SEO. For instance for merchants who require a vendors related plugin, the product filters may fulfill the requirements with minor modifications using the MS2.2 stock code.
